Extracting data from certificates of deposit

A bank issues a certificate of deposit as a promise to repay a sum with interest on a fixed date, and a negotiable one can be sold on before then. Every issuing bank engraves its own form. Trust departments and archives digitize them in batches, arriving as scans and photographs of paper.

A holder needs the issuing bank, the principal, the rate, the term and the value at maturity. A custody or treasury system books the instrument from those, and prices it against the date it falls due.

The problem

What makes certificates of deposit hard

Handwriting over engraved print

The amount, the term and the rate are written or typed into blanks on a printed form, in a mix of scripts.

A choice left in the form

A certificate offers to pay the bearer or the order of a named holder, with a note to delete whichever does not apply.

Stamps stacked down the edge

Revenue stamps sit along one side, each carrying its own value, outside the flow of the certificate's text.

How it works

Parse, extract, verify

1

Parse

Parse turns the document into reading-order Markdown and a hierarchy of blocks (text, tables, figures), and grounds each block to its exact location on the page.

2

Extract

You define the fields in a JSON schema, and Extract returns their values in a consistent, structured format, each linked back to where it appears in the Markdown.

3

Verify

Each value links back to where it appears, down to the character range in the Markdown, and the page and bounding box in the source document, so every result can be verified.

Worked example

One negotiable certificate of deposit, end to end

About this document: A Barclays Bank D.C.O. negotiable certificate of deposit, No. 301, issued in Johannesburg. Published by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on its history pages. One landscape image, black and white, 600 pixels wide, completed by hand and typewriter on an engraved form, with three revenue stamps down the edge and two signatures.

Processing objective: The objective is to read the instrument's terms off a small, old reproduction: who issued it, for how much, at what rate and for how long. The figures agree, since the principal plus 3.65 per cent for 180 days gives the R101,800 the form prints as its value at maturity.

Demonstration fields: Issuing bank, Principal, Interest rate, Term in days, Value at maturity

Documents into data

Accurate

The best accuracy on the difficult documents other tools get wrong, such as messy scans, complicated tables, checkboxes and handwriting.

Auditable

Every answer cites its sources. Values come back with an audit trail (page, bounding box, character range) so a human can review them.

Agentic

Applies multi-step reasoning, and plans before it acts. Handles documents it has never seen before and adapts to variations.

API-first

Composable APIs that drop into any tech stack and can be called from anywhere. Easy to build on and embed in your pipelines and products.

Affordable

Cost-competitive rates with complete price transparency. Spend controls before you run, and every job reports its exact cost.

Enterprise-grade

Built for production and scale from day one. Fully observable and monitored, running securely in our cloud or yours.

Built for high-volume, high-throughput production

  • Zero data retention
  • Priority rate limits
  • Enhanced support
  • VPC and on-prem deployment

Questions, answered

Yes. Handwritten and typewritten entries parse alongside the printed form they sit in, so an amount written into a blank comes back with the same grounding as engraved text.

Yes. A reproduction a few hundred pixels wide parses, and grounding coordinates come back against whatever image was supplied, so an archive can work from the scan it already holds.

Yes. The stamps come back as a figure with a description that reads each one's value, so duty paid is available beside the certificate's own terms.

Yes. Both printed alternatives come back as text, along with the footnote telling the issuer to delete whichever does not apply, so a reader sees exactly what the form offered.

Every value comes back with its page, a bounding box and the character range in the parsed Markdown. The box can be drawn onto the image, so a reviewer sees the line it was read from.
